Top Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP K Muraleedharan was arrested Tuesday by police for allegedly making disparaging remarks against the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram city Arya Rajendran, police said.

Police said a case had been filed against the Congress leader under sections 354A of the IPC (Sexual Harassment and Punishment for Sexual Harassment) and 509 (Speech, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a person. female) based on the complainant filed by CPI member Rajendran (M) alleging he insulted her femininity by making derogatory remarks against her during a protest outside the company’s office on Monday.

Speaking to congressional workers at a protest calling for action against company officials allegedly involved in a tax scam, Muraleedharan said the mayor was magnificent but what came out of his mouth was more terrible than the “Songs of Kodungallur Bharani”.

Kodungallur Bharani songs are folk songs mixed with offensive lyrics sung at the famous Devi temple in Kodungallur in Thrissur district during the famous Meena Bharani festival. Such songs are sung by thousands of oracles gathered at the temple as part of an occasional ritual. Meanwhile, Muraleedharan today expressed regret for his remarks, saying he was not aiming to hurt anyone but criticized the mayor for alleged corruption within Thiruvananthapuram society.

“I regret if my remarks have caused mental distress to anyone personally. I don’t hesitate to say it. I don’t want any of my statements to hurt anyone personally, ”the Vatakara MP said in a Facebook post.

He said, however, that he saw nothing vulgar in saying that someone is beautiful. Muraleedharan alleged that the company was witnessing unprecedented corruption in LDF rule and that the mayor could not shirk his responsibilities. CPI (M) and his DYFI youth team flayed Muraleedharan for his remarks against Rajendran, 22, one of the country’s youngest mayors. She became mayor of Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 21 after the CPI (M)-led LDF swept polls held last year.
