COLUMN: My top 10 Halloween songs to make you feel creepy

I’ve always been a huge Halloween fan. My family made matching costumes and had a big party every year. Love for Halloween has stayed with me and loving Halloween comes with loving music for the holidays.

Here is my take on the ten best Halloween songs or Halloween themes. I only included songs with lyrics, because while there are some scary movies with iconic soundtracks, that’s not what I gravitate towards. These songs are sure to make you dance like this viral guy in the pumpkin mask.

10. “I want candy” – I put this as number 10 because I’m not really sure it’s a Halloween song, but I love candy. It’s the best reason for the holidays, and a song about it is a good bet on a Halloween playlist.

9. “Werewolves of London” – I know some people might not think of this as a Halloween song too, but it’s just a cool song. I also like the little howling parts in it.

8. “Thriller” – A very good song, but maybe overplayed? The talking part of this song hits like nothing else when everyone shouts it together, so it earns points.

7. “Purple People Eater” – I’m not sure if everyone considers this a Halloween song, but if it’s not, what else is it? I listened to this during my Halloween parties in elementary school, and it’s just a cute song.

6. “It’s Halloween” – An iconic song. If this is not repeated on your Halloween party, you are wrong. My take is that I’m not the biggest fan of this movie, so it’s just losing points there.

5. Time Warp – I always watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show at this time of year, so I think that matters. I would listen to this song anytime because it’s really good to dance to and easy to scream with. This song gets bonus points because you’ll have that friend trying to sing the really high part and it’s fun to laugh at them when they do (that’s me. I’m the friend).

4. “Somebody’s Watching Me” – This song has spooky lyrics, so I decided it counts as Halloween music. There are just some super iconic verses like, “When I’m in the shower I’m scared to wash my hair / Because I might open my eyes and find someone standing there.” Haven’t we all felt this at some point?

3. “Ghostbusters” – I love this song because I love this movie. It’s so eye-catching. Everyone knows the words and this song gets the energy going!

2. “Spooky Scary Skeletons” – I love this song. Everything about this song is so good: the beat, the lyrics, the TikTok dances. I would even go so far as to say that I even love some of the remixes that were made for this song, even if nothing is better than the original.

1. “Monster Mash” – This song simply transcends. It’s THE quintessential Halloween song, and no spooky season is complete without it.
