GOOD FOR: Cabin Quality, Feature List
WARNING: AMT gearbox, Wear of the suspensions
the hyundai The i10 nameplate has proven to be very popular in India over the years, with buyers being attracted by its refined engine options, equipment levels and easy-to-drive nature.
the Grand i10 Nios, which launched in August 2019, built on the strengths of its predecessors and became an even more complete package with its premium interiors and extended list of features. The Nios comes across as the perfect family hatchback for the city, but there are a few things to note before deciding to buy it.
The Grand i10 Nios was launched with 1.2 liter petrol and diesel engines. The CRDi diesel engine is a turbocharged three-cylinder that produces 75 hp and 190 Nm of torque and the petrol engine is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder that produces 83 hp and 114 Nm of torque. Both engines can be equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox or an AMT automatic gearbox.
Nios’ 1.2 diesel is refined and very frugal.
In our road test review, the petrol manual Nios 1.2 returned 13 kpl in the city and 16.21 kpl on the highway while the petrol AMT managed a better 13.76 kpl in the city and 16.61 kpl on the highway. The diesels are very frugal though, with the manual returning 14.90 kpl and 19.64 kpl in the city and on the highway respectively. The diesel AMT follows the manual closely, with 14.87 kpl in the city and 19.36 kpl on the highway.
Hyundai also introduced two more powertrain options after the initial launch. One was the CNG, which uses the same engine as the 1.2 petrol, but has a lower output of 69hp and 95Nm, and the other was the performance-oriented Turbo, which uses a 1.2 petrol turbo engine. .0 liter direct injection. which produces 100 hp and 172 Nm.
In terms of features, the top-end Asta variant comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Arkamys sound system, automatic climate control, a 5.3-inch partially digital dash, wireless charging, cooled glove box, leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry with start/stop button, rear air vents, camera rear parking space, electrically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors and a rear screen washer/wiper. On the safety side, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminders and rear parking sensors are standard across the range.
The blackened C-pillar gives the roof a floating effect; The 15-inch alloys look neat.
It is better to opt for the premium Asta trim or the Sportz trim as they offer all the necessary features like touchscreen, alloy wheels and parking camera. On the engine-gearbox side, your use should determine your choice. If you’re an avid driver, the Nios Turbo is for you, but if you’re looking for a cheap automobile, the CNG will serve you just fine. The 1.2 essences are also quite mild and frugal. However, the diesel AMT is now a unique proposition in this segment. Not only do you get higher fuel economy, but there’s also the convenience of the automatic gearbox. Plus, diesel also costs less than gasoline, currently, so that’s another added bonus.
The i10 Nios is known to be a reliable model that should give you peace of mind. Replacement parts are widely available and priced more or less on par with other parts in the segment. Plus, there’s also Hyundai’s extensive service network in the country to draw on.
As is the case with all AMTs, it is best to inspect the clutch for wear before making the purchase. On a test drive, make sure the car’s creep function works well, it comes off the line smoothly, and gear changes aren’t jerky. These are signs of a healthy AMT box.
Some i10 Nios owners have reported early suspension wear in their cars. During the test drive, check whether the car’s suspension rattles or crashes excessively on bad roads. This is a sign of a worn suspension bushing, which will need to be replaced.
Although not a common problem, few owners have experienced problems with the Nios A/C system not cooling properly. It could be a problem with the AC coil, so it’s best to test it before buying.
Also to know
Before making the purchase, it is always advisable to check the condition of consumable parts such as brake pads, tires and fluids. Also, since the Grand i10 Nios is a relatively new model, look to buy one that has an extended warranty package as this will help your ownership experience.
